Ascension Day – May 21, 2020

Ascension Day

Dear Church Family,

Today in the Church Calendar is Ascension Day. Each year we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension on the Thursday in the Sixth Week of Easter, forty days after the Day of Resurrection. The Easter season lasts ten more days until sundown on Pentecost Sunday, May 31.

In past years I have held Ascension Day services on Thursdays. I now more often move the Feast, as permitted to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Most church people, were the service today (not given this present year) would miss the story and Feast. In a different era, when attendance patterns were different, it would be less an issue. In the church I grew up in, Ascension was a footnote, not a celebration with its own day.

I am reserving further comments until tomorrow. Clea will be sending the Readings and Comments for Sunday to you. When we join together for worship via the link Mike makes available, we’ll observe the Feast then, with these readings, the homily.

I have copied an alternate Collect for this day below. Pray the Collect at some point today. Take time and think about it — listen for what it says, and through the prayer, what God is saying and inviting you into:

Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into heaven, so we may also in heart and mind there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the God above us, beneath us, find a place for the Divine Life to dwell within us, Fr. Steve
